Trail Running at Macritchie Reservoir

It has been awhile since my last entry. I have been diligently running around my schedule of work and school. It has been doing well so far, and I’m ever so thankful that I have not been injured for this month of January, and that my running has been more consistent. I’d attribute it to some of the thing I’ve learnt it school, and I have quickly applied it to my training.

A quick side-note; I have yet to hear of any announcement regarding the Sundown Ultramarathon. My personal hunch is, that with the move of the Sundown Marathon event to ‘the city’, the organizers may not have enough manpower (planning and/or logistics) to support an Ultramarathon although it’s just a month away. Who knows there might be an announcement sometime soon?

Anyway, after having purchased my defacto trail running shoes, The Northface Singletrack, I was beginning to wonder when I would ever push myself out the door and head down to the trails. After much procrastination during the seemingly long Chinese New Year holiday (which was from Sunday to Tuesday), I finally made the trip on a Tuesday morning.

With little knowledge I had on trails, I headed out, put on my running shoes, and ran the trails.

After the first session.

It was a hard effort. It had been 2 years since I did a trail run at Macritchie Reservoir. My only mistake was running a little too fast, and not carrying water/electrolytes with me. That said, I had abdominal pains which lasted awhile. Despite that, I was hooked. Running on the trails was way more fun than on the road.

About a week before CNY, I noticed that the US Dollar dropped to a reasonable point where I could purchase an essential trail running gear which I had wanted to own for quite a while now, so, after the delayed shipment due to CNY, I received it; the Salomon XT Advanced Skin 5 S-Lab Pack.

Salomon XT Advanced Skin 5 S-Lab Pack

iRunFar.com has a good review on it, so check it out. My take on it after trying it out on another trail session today was that it really was a very good pack. It stays to your body, doesn’t bounce around and has a sizable number of compartments to carry other items (phones, muesli bars, etc). While you can get this pack at the Salomon Store in Singapore (caveat: i think it’s really overpriced), I chose to get mine from the Racingtheplanet Store. They have great service and fast delivery with a reasonable shipping price. I did however, order something else;

Salomon Soft Flask

Fan’s of Kilian Jornet would have seen him use this particular item during his win at the Western States 100 Endurance Run last year, where he carried 2 such bottles (Kilian’s look larger in terms of capacity) in custom made gloves for ease of carry. Basically, it’s made of material similar to the bladder powering the S-Lab pack, but comes in neat capacity of 237ml. With a bite valve, the flask ensures that water doesn’t leak out, and compresses and lightens when it runs out of water.

I regretted not buying one more, which would make my training runs around my neighborhood much easier without carry bottled water. My ideal setup would be one for water and one for electrolytes.

I returned from my second trail session of the year today, and that makes it my firs time running Macritchie twice within a week thanks to the holidays. It felt much better today, although I got a little lost there trying to find a longer route to run. Click here and here for my training logs.

Terry Fox Run 2012

January 16th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

The Terry Fox Run 2012 must be the only run privileged enough to have started off my 2012 and 2011 running calendar. While I ran with a group of friends last year, this year was a solo run for me. I do have to thank Azhar for accompanying me to the run despite withdrawing from the event due to an injured ligament.

For a start, it really is a no-frills run. Aside from having no numbered bibs and no registration fees (actually it’s more like paying for the shirt and donating any amount you want for charity), it really is nice to attend an event where there isn’t any sense of competitiveness. Everyone is there to support a good cause, and remember Terry Fox and his legacy to the world.

Based on last years run, I would assume that it had no water points (not that it mattered), so I brought along my Hilly water bottle filled with Nathan Catalysts. I’m still struggling to get used to the drink, and perhaps if i can get hold of NUUN’s, I can do a comparison to see which is the better electrolyte tablet.

As I’m currently studying sports science, I applied the knowledge I applied some knowledge I picked up from class for the run.

First off would be carrying electrolyte drinks, as well as practicing only dynamic stretching before the start of the run. I started off the run pretty strongly thanks to consistent training runs prior to this event.

Next, I based my pace according to the average pace for the last KM, instead of having a live average pace calculated via my Garmin 305, this is to better know how fast I’ve been running and set my pace accordingly. This worked very well for the run today as I did not stop but for only one toilet break towards the 5km mark. You can check out the comparison runs between 2012 and 2011 here. What’s more interesting is that the distance is exactly the same as it was the last year, which was about 9.68km.

There were volunteers holding up route markets along the way, and I have to give them credit for cheering the runners on despite it being a non-competitive event. Bottles of water were given out at some distance markers as well.

Towards the end, I  re-opened my anaerobic-lactate capacity and went full steam to the finish line, greeted by lots of spectators and volunteers. Its nice to have a giant cookie given to you at the finishing instead of a medal. I then joined the line for the Starbucks drink that was given and the line was pretty long. But I figured I wasn’t going to be so cheapskate, so I headed down to 7-11 and bought chocolate milk as my recovery drink.

If you interested to see the comparisons of chocolate milk and recovery drinks, click here and maybe here.

Overall, a great run for a great cause. Will definitely attend the run again next year.

RunSociety has good photo coverage of event in their FB album and I found another one on Flickr.

2011 Running Season Review

As 2011 draws to close, I thought it’d be nice to review, and reflect what has gone on with my running season this year.

It has been a year where I ran close to 10 races, with 2 races I did not start due to injury. It will probably be the first and last time I did such a thing as I move on to more important goals in running for 2012.

Highlights of this years runs:

  • Terry Fox Run: A great run to start the year with, having run with some friends who are non-runners. Looking forward to running it again next year.
  • Men’s Health Urbanathlon: Probably the most expensive race by far, enjoyable despite the price tag. Still deciding whether to go for it again next year.
  • 2XU Compression Run: Pricey 12k run, but the route was alright. Do not think will be running it again next year.
  • 100Plus Passion Run: Hot run. Will not be running it again next year.
  • Sundown Marathon: Achieved a new personal best for my marathon category at 5:01:19. Was very close at achieving a Sub-5.
  • Jurong Lake Run: My last run before I got injured and was sidelined for 2 months. A good run in the west nevertheless, but needs more waterpoints.
  • Yellow Ribbon Prison Run: One of the first runs after my injury, challenging and hot course.
  • Nike We Run SG 10K: One of the more poorly managed races this year.
  • New Balance Real Run: My 3rd Real Run, but my role this time was more of a pacer for a friend.
  • Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore: A memorable run despite not having clocked a personal best.

Apart from races, meeting Kilian Jornet was just something I never thought would happen. To meet with a word class athlete of his level, and getting to hear him speak in person is definitely the highlight of 2011.

Next year will be different. Will be participating in less of the shorter races to spend more time to prepare for ultra-running and trail-running. Training will be not be any easier as I have school to juggle it with my part-time studies, as well as full-time work. There has been a lot of mixed feelings and downtime this year, and hopefully I can train correctly and not get myself injured so often. All in all, besides personal troubles, it has been a fruitful year for running.

I shall leave you with a video from Salomon Running. Hopefully, it will inspire your own goals for next year. Happy new year everyone!
